The most direct route from Caceres into
Castilla y Leon and Avila is up the Valle del
Jerte (left). The valley produces the majority
of Spain's cherries, but it was about 2 weeks
passed the prime blossom time when we
passed through.
Avila is surrounded by the longest,
most intact Roman walls in Spain, and
probably Europe. They are truly
amazing.
Avila Cathedral seen from atop the
walls
Walking along the walls of Avila. It was
freezing. It had been low 70s on the
the other side of the mountains in
Extremadura, but in Avila it was about
38 degrees and very windy.
The Sierra de Gredos. Madrid and Toledo are on the other side of this range.
